Our Mission: The women of Sound Circle, an a cappella women’s vocal ensemble, have come together to experience the deep joy of making music together and to share that joy with our audiences.
In all of the choices we make, we keep in mind the above mission statement and the elaboration below of the three elements of that mission: Who is the ensemble? What music do we sing and why? Who are the individuals that constitute our audience and what will nourish them?
The ensemble: 16-20 auditioned singers from the Boulder County area. The members of Sound Circle are women working together in an atmosphere of mutual respect and appreciation to create performances that speak to the hearts and souls of ourselves and our audiences. Many of the singers are lesbian, which informs our messages and outreach.
Our music: We sing music that speaks of our experience of the world. We care about authenticity and relevance. Our awareness of the healing power of ensemble singing and our performance values of aesthetic arrest and existential ease influence our choice of repertoire and our sound quality. Most of our music is contemporary, and much of it is created by women. In our commissioning and creating of new music, we aspire to be refreshing, exploratory, and true to ourselves.
Our target audiences: The communities in which we live, including the glbtq and women’s communities, and individuals supportive of and attuned to those communities; liberal/progressive and peace/justice communities; the musical/arts community; and all other individuals who would be moved by our music and message; primarily in Boulder County and the Front Range, but also nationally through glbt and feminist choral networks. We care about acting locally, performing in support of social justice and social service organizations, and we value our role in the fabric of social awareness and activism in our home community.
